TITLE: Law of Definite Composition
Lead + Sulfur --> Lead Sulfide

A. Use the data in the table below. Fill in columns C to E. The mass of sulfur is obtained by subtracting the mass of lead from the mass of lead sulfide.

MASS of LEAD
  1. 7.00
  2. 6.25
  3. 9.93
  4. 6.00
  5. 12.79
  6. 11.71
  7. 14.65
  8. 16.90
MASS of SULFIDE
  1. 8.15
  2. 7.18
  3. 11.61
  4. 6.90
  5. 14.79
  6. 13.59
  7. 16.87
  8. 19.46

B. Plot the mass of sulfur on the y-axis against the mass of lead on the x-axis. Consult your teacher for the correct plotting technique.

C. Plot the mass of sulfur on the y-axis against the mass of lead sulfide on the x-axis.

DISCUSSION:

a. Describe the 2 plots that you have drawn.
b. Determine from the graph the mass of lead that combines with 1.6 g of sulfur.
c. Determine from the graph the mass of lead sulfide produced from 1.6 g of sulfur.
d. Make a general statement about the ratio of mass of lead to the mass of sulfur.
e. Make a general statement about the ratio of the mass of lead to the mass of lead sulfide.
f. State Law of Definite Composition.
